Museums Victoria is seeking an experienced and talented Senior Curator, First Peoples to provide high-level curatorial expertise for the First Peoples department of Museums Victoria, including in community access, collection development and research, and to lead the development and presentation of cultural heritage material that is cared for in the First Peoples Collections. This position will also provide internal and external advice related to First Peoples material.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

This position is responsible for undertaking the management of curatorial staff and projects across the First Peoples Collections. The position manages community collaboration and collection development. The incumbent will be required to work across the Museum and with external stakeholders to build an active program of exhibitions, public programs, research and documentation. This role will be expected to work across the whole of the First Peoples Collection.

Key duties include

  1. Contribute to the overall management and direction of the First Peoples Department and R&C Division through leadership of projects, management of project budgets and schedules (as required), participation in strategic planning, and management of project staff and volunteers.
  2. Take primary responsibility for collection development and documentation and contribute to policy development in the First Peoples Collections.
  3. Initiate, supervise and undertake original research, promote the use of collections for research, seek external grant funding, supervise research students and publicly communicate the results of research in appropriate national and international forums and publications.
  4. Enable improved access to the collections and information through community consultation, upgrading of collection databases and their content, online and virtual projects, liaison with collection managers and information managers, and provision of expert advice to users of the collections.
