The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) is one of Australia’s oldest cultural institutions and the largest cultural network within regional Australia. Established in 1891, the QVMAG includes the Museum at Inveresk and the Art Gallery at Royal Park and is custodian to over one and half million objects of national and international significance. This is considered to be one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia, spanning Natural Sciences, Visual Arts and Design, Public History, and Indigenous Culture. QVMAG delivers exhibitions and public programs at its two sites and has outreach programs that extend its reach around the state and further afield.
The Senior Curator Natural Sciences is a member of the QVMAG Curatorial Team. Working closely with the Team Leader Curatorial and other members of the team, the role will plan, manage, and implement programs for the strategic development of the collection, exhibitions, interpretation, research, promotion and care of the Natural Sciences collection, which comprises the QVMAG’s Zoology, Botany and Geology Collections.
The Senior Curator Natural Sciences is a full-time, ongoing employment opportunity within one of the largest and most diverse cultural institutions in regional Australia.
We are looking for someone who demonstrates, through behaviour, an alignment and an understanding of our values and has the following qualifications, skills and experience:
- Tertiary qualifications in a field of Natural Science relevant to the collection
- Demonstrated understanding of the multi-faceted role of a curator in a large museum operating in the contemporary cultural sector
- Demonstrated research experience, with research results communicated in a variety of media (scholarly publications, popular publications).
- Broad knowledge of Natural Sciences and specialist knowledge in an area relevant to the QVMAG Natural Sciences collections. Specialist knowledge in entomology or a related field will be well regarded.
- Experience in planning and participating in diverse public programs for diverse audiences; exhibition experience will be very highly regarded
- Experience working within a museum or similar environment combining scholarship with public education, and with Natural Science collections
