Duties
The Australian War Memorial’s Research Centre is a leader in public engagement and digital access to its collections. The archive offers a rich collection documenting the Australian experience of war from colonial conflicts to the present day. The position oversees a collection featuring over 10,000 manuscript writings and over 250,000 official records including unit and operational records, biographical records and official historians’ records.
The Australian War Memorial’s Research Centre is seeking an energetic, knowledgeable and dynamic leader to serve as Senior Curator Official and Private Records. Responsibilities include management and oversight of the Memorial’s archival collections, staff, special projects, acquisitions, research, client liaison and outreach. The successful candidate will serve as a resource on the legal framework for collection management including the Archives Act, intellectual property and copyright issues. The position will promote digital innovation related to archival materials.
Responsibilities:
- Providing leadership in collection development:
– Demonstrated knowledge of current trends, standards, and practices of archival management and services
– Oversee and manage collection preservation, particularly digital storag
– Oversee and manage access to the collection in accordance with the Archives Act. - Undertake complex research and analysis, develop policy and provide expert advice applicable to a wide range of issues relating to the management of a museum archive and the Memorial’s Roll of Honour
- Ability to establish and cultivate relationships with kindred organisations and represent the Memorial.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster a collegial work environment and encourage change and innovation; and the ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with the broader community
- Provide leadership for staff in the Official and Private Records unit.
- Ability to thrive in a team setting and handle multiple responsibilities in a team environment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organisational, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
- Exercise required financial and administrative delegations.
- Support Head RC as required by coordinating and managing the input business and budget planning, as well as regular HR and budget reporting processes.
- Provide high level advice to senior management.

- The successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance.
- Non-ongoing opportunity will be offered for a specified term
- Initial 12 month contract with the possibility of extension.
