Position Description

Museum Victoria is seeking a Senior Curator, South-eastern Australia Aboriginal Collections, to provide curatorial expertise so as to ensure that the Indigenous collections from south-eastern Australia are accessible to Indigenous communities, are actively used in exhibitions, public programs, online projects and research projects, and that the collection is developed so that it reflects the contemporary experiences of Aboriginal communities in Victoria and South-eastern Australia.

This position is only available to people who identify themselves as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. This constitutes a special measure under section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

About the position

The position is accountable for curatorial research, overseeing the development of the South-eastern Australia Aboriginal collections. The position will undertake extensive community collaboration in order to document the collections and make them accessible. The person will be required to work collaboratively across the Museum and with external stakeholders to build an active program of research, documentation, exhibitions and programs.

Notable skills and experiences:

  1. Extensive knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their social, political and environmental history, especially through the study of material culture.
  2. A demonstrated understanding of cultural and legal issues relating to facilitating access to Indigenous collections, and demonstrated experience in undertaking cultural permissions.
  3. A demonstrated ability to work effectively with communities, especially with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  4. Extensive experience in developing high quality exhibitions, public programs, exhibitions, publications and on-line products.
  5. Experience in the use of collection management databases and systems to manage information relating to collections and to make it accessible, especially through online access.
  6. Excellent communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a networked organisation, and the ability to communicate effectively with key stakeholder groups and professional networks.
