You will lead a team to manage the transport, energy and science collections within the History, Industry and Technology stream of Cultures and Histories. In accordance with agreed strategic priorities of Queensland Museum, you will initiate, coordinate, and implement new research, and develop innovative exhibitions and public programs for the Cultures & Histories program at The Workshops Rail Museum (TWRM), Cobb&Co (C+C) and at other locations throughout the Queensland Museum Network (QMN).
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS
Tertiary, preferably postgraduate, qualifications in Australian Social History, Industrial Archaeology, History of Science or Transport or other closely related fields (e.g. Australian Studies, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies), from a recognised tertiary institution is required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and manage the curatorial and collections staff at TWRM and C+C to meet brand, vision and strategic and operational plan objectives. Oversee and supervise researchers, students and volunteers in the identification, assessment and accessioning of artefacts to specialist levels, and ensure the accuracy of the associated electronic databases (Vernon Collection Management System and Digital Asset Management System). Contribute to the development, revision and implementation of collections policies and procedures.
- Take responsibility for the Transport, Energy and Science collections within the History, Industry and Technology stream of the Cultures and Histories Program to efficiently and effectively meet Program and institutional objectives. Ensure that Queensland Museum collections are managed and new material acquired within the principles of ‘Due Diligence’.
- Contribute to the operational management of TWRM through active participation as a member of leadership teams and working parties.
- Manage, mentor, coach and train direct reports within the functional unit, encouraging innovation and excellence within the team to develop cutting edge exhibitions, publications and public programs.
- Lead and participate in project teams to provide expert advice in the design and development of public display and public education programs. Develop work plans and manage projects, including budgets and staff, for agreed projects.
- Conduct research in a field related to history or study of transport, energy or science and related to material culture and museology, in collaboration with researchers from other research organisations, leading to internationally recognised peer-reviewed publications, popular publications and other media outputs. Seek external funding, including Discovery and Linkage Projects through the ARC, to provide research outcomes consistent with the strategic directions of the Queensland Museum.
- Strategically enhance and build the State collections through field work, collaborative research and coordination of philanthropic support/donations. Develop a high profile for the collections and unit through initiating, coordinating and presenting public forums on relevant themes; sensitive and effective liaison with external stakeholders at a local, state, national and international level; and providing advice and information about Queensland social history collections to the general public, Queensland Museum and Government as required.
- Participate in public relations, media and institutional fundraising and awareness campaigns to promote the Museum’s results and activities.
- Contribute to the safety culture of QMN by reporting all incidents and hazards and ensuring work is undertaken in the safest way possible, following all QMN WHS policies/ procedures and guidelines relevant to the job.
