The key duties of the position include:

Reporting to the Head of Education you will be responsible for managing the Museum’s onsite and online school education program, from K-Y12. You will be an expert in developing Australian curriculum-based programs, led the strategic development of new onsite, digital, and outreach educational programs.

This position will design and manage formal education programs as per the Australian curriculum that engage and enthral students of all ages with Australia’s maritime story. It will develop and implement strategies to maximise the educational use of the Museum’s digital and on-site resources, develop content and programs that align with Museum priorities and make use of current, best practice pedagogical theory.

This role will work with the marketing stakeholders to manage the promotion of the Museum’s school programs while monitoring and evaluating their quality. It will manage the casual Museum Educators and program delivery. This position will join in exhibition and other program teams to ensure Education section involvement across the Museum.

Your key responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement strategies that maximise the educational use of the Museum’s both onsite, online and off-site in touring programs.
  • Design and develop innovative curriculum-based resource material (including online content) and programs to support educational use of the Museum in line with audience needs and the relevant curriculum areas.
  • Identify opportunities and research new areas for the development of tailored educational programs for specific audiences including students, teachers.
  • Work with the marketing stakeholders and liaise with schools and the wider community to promote the Museum’s education programs.
  • Develop exciting and innovative educational programs to accompany exhibitions.
  • Ensure travelling exhibitions have an associated education program where applicable.
  • Liaise with the Digital Education/Project Officer to ensure education resources are updated on the Museum’s website
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to Museum leadership and Head of Education on Museum’s education programs.
  • Implement ongoing evaluation framework and measurement tools to evaluate program outcomes and effectiveness, drive continuous improvement, use of new technology and best practice in education. Review and refine the process for evaluating existing programs and their delivery.
  • Develop documentation including papers, reports, presentations, proposals, communications, briefings, policies and strategies for a variety of audiences, as required.
  • Implement effective and efficient budget controls, workforce management and capability development, business systems and processes.
  • Identify and report on risks and challenges and implement and monitor risk mitigation strategies ensuring all events and programs are compliant in line with policies and procedures.
  • Develop and manage the evaluation of Museum Educators to ensure quality of delivery, providing regular feedback and support.
  • Oversee the education budget for school programs. Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Work with and manage the work of external contractors in the development of both digital and physical education resources.
  • Take responsibility for and manage the Education Collection of objects used for augmenting museum education experiences.
  • Consult with stakeholders and staff to ensure all issues around safety are considered, and that risks and hazards are identified and appropriate mitigation put in place.
  • Provide reports and statistics as required.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • A degree in Education and/or tertiary qualification relevant to learning in Museum/Cultural and/or educational contexts.
  • Relevant practical experience in school and/or museum education.
  • Excellent understanding of current curriculum priorities and the curriculum development process (Science/History preferred – not essential).
  • Experience working with and designing digital learning tools and resources.
  • Ability to design and manage educational programs of high quality, appeal and relevance to teacher and student audiences.
  • Ability to engage, brief and manage external contractors in developing excellent resources.
  • Ability to be agile, creative and flexible in developing innovative programs that engage and inspire students of all ages.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop productive relationships with multiple stakeholders including teachers, students, and internal teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, work in a team environment and supervise staff or lead a team of casual employees.
  • Effective written and spoken communication strategies for a range of contexts.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and manage time effectively.
  • Understanding of the school excursion marketplace.
  • Understanding of the marketing of educational services and products to schools

Notes

Selection for this position will be made on the basis of relative merit which will be assessed against each item of the selection criteria. Applications that do not address the selection criteria will not be considered for shortlisting by the Selection Committee. As part of the selection process the selection committee may invite candidates to undertake a psychometric test, you should advise the selection committee if you have any special needs. Psychometric tests may be used as the initial short-listing test or later in the selection process. Some tests are very short while others may take one or more hours.
