The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool, the Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.
We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is of international renown as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our goldrush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.
We are seeking a highly motivated person to join the Exhibit Support Team as Senior Exhibit Support Officer. The role sits within the Collections and Curatorial team whose primary purpose is to collect, conserve, research, and interpret the significance of the Victorian gold rush and the changes brought by it in Ballarat’s social, cultural, economic, political, and technological heritage. The team cares for, manages, and provides access to a collection of more than 150,000 objects, including many objects of national and international significance across multiple sites.
As Senior Exhibit Support Officer you will contribute to the ongoing presentation and care of the museum’s collections, spaces and exhibits. Reporting to the Collections Manager, you will supervise the exhibit support team and provide training as required. The Senior Exhibit Support Officer is a critical part of the collections team, responsible for maintaining a high standard of presentation and care for both static and activated buildings and exhibits in the museum.
The key aspects of the role include:
- Using appropriate methods and materials, maintain and clean exhibits, buildings and collection objects across the three museum sites, (Outdoor Museum, Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections & Narmbool) in line with museum best practice
- Supervise the Exhibit Support team, manage and maintain rosters and train staff in duties and tasks
- Support collection documentation projects including cataloguing and location management updates
- Assist with collection object and location auditing
