Duties
The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial’s purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war or on operational service and those who have served our nation in times of conflict. Its mission is leading remembrance and understanding of Australia’s wartime experience.
The Senior Historian performs a range of high-level research and writing tasks under the limited direction of the Head of the Military History Section in support of Australian War Memorial military history publications, conferences, exhibitions, multimedia products and related projects, presenting the findings of research and the dissemination of military history information. The Senior Historian also undertakes a range of management and leadership tasks, represents the Memorial through media and conference presentations, and liaises with stakeholder groups and other agencies at the appropriate level.
Core Responsibilities
Under the limited direction of the Head of the Military History Section:
- Undertake research and writing tasks at an appropriate level for the Memorial’s historical publications, exhibitions, displays, and related projects.
- Contribute to Memorial projects through historical research, writing, speaking, liaison, provision of historical advice, and by undertaking administrative tasks.
- Lead and manage a small team, which may include historians, editors and volunteers and contribute to the overall management of the Military History Section, including the provision of input into budgets and business plans; manage discrete projects and activities and participate fully in the activities of the section.
- Undertake projects requiring specialist knowledge of Australian military history, including the development of exhibitions, dissemination of information, and fostering of research and writing in Australian military history.
- Manage the scheduling and production of Last Post Ceremony stories and associated material (preambles and website content) to the highest expected standards, and ensure their timely delivery; also carry out associated research, writing and liaison duties.
Eligibility
A postgraduate qualification in military history or another relevant field is highly desirable. A substantial publication record in relevant fields, including significant research and publication in the military history of one or more major conflicts, would be advantageous.
