Senior Product Manager, Retail

Australia’s largest public museum organisation is offering a full-time ongoing opportunity as a Senior Product Manager within the Retail department at Museum’s Victoria.

The purpose of this position is to lead the development and purchasing of merchandise that links to Museums Victoria’s (‘MV’) permanent and temporary exhibitions. With the purpose to create more cohesion between our collections and multiple retail sites including Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the MV Online. In addition to support the product growth strategy to deliver on revenue targets across all sites.

The position will also be responsible for implementing a stock purchasing strategy across Museums Victoria’s multiple sites to maximise profitability. This includes but is not limited to reviewing, updating and complying with Museums Victoria’s stock buying procedures to ensure stock appropriateness, budgeted profit margins and optimal stock levels.

About The Position

The position is accountable for merchandise development, planning, purchasing and monitoring inventory for the retail outlets at all Museums Victoria venues, ensuring that all plans adhere to MV procedures and guidelines.

Key Duties include

  • Lead a process to develop and implement an integrated stock buying strategy that supports the Retail budget for Museums Victoria, maximising revenue whilst delivering a high-quality visitor experience and building the Museums Victoria brand.
  • Manage the purchasing of third-party products, excluding books, ensuring the core range is well curated and regularly refreshed (approx. 3500+ SKUs). Ensure product is commercially viable, suitable for visitation, sales projections and for MV audience demographic. Ensure all Australian standards are adhered to.  Stock mix in line with sales data and target market.
  • Identify new business opportunities including new suppliers of third-party merchandise, linking these products to exhibition themes and calendar events to enhance the visitor experience.
  • Perform financial modelling, maintain accurate documentation, report product performance/ ROI and provide detailed analysis and adjust buying and replenishment strategy in line with real time and projected visitation and sales data to ensure budgets are met and managed.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated skills and experience in Retail maths – forecasting, inventory, margin calculation, margin mix and markdown strategy. They will also have demonstrated experience in range planning and reviews – reviewing product performance and making decisions for future space in store. They will be able to analyse data, monthly financial reports for senior management requirement. They will be proficient in excel sheets, as their main tool to analyse data, and support future forecasting and planning.
