Museum Victoria is seeking a Senior Project Officer, Repatriation & Community Support, to provide specialist expertise and provide a link between Aboriginal communities, the Humanities Department and the Repatriation Team to ensure effective delivery of the Return of Indigenous Cultural Property program. This is an identified position, the position is only available to people who identify themselves as Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander. ABOUT THE POSITION:

The position is accountable for the delivery of a strategically focussed program for the return of ancestral remains and secret/sacred material at Museum Victoria. This includes liaising with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal organisations in identifying relevant holdings and brokering discussions between interested parties; facilitating the reburial of remains by working with Aboriginal communities and other relevant government agencies; and providing support to the Collection Manager, Restricted Collections for the effective management of the collections. The position will also contribute to development of work plans and budgets for annual funding rounds; and contribute to development of interim and final reports for the Return of Indigenous Cultural Property program.

Notable skills and experiences:

  1. Sound knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society, particularly in south-eastern Australia, and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  2. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  3. Experience in cultural heritage management and demonstrated skills in liaison and administrative or collection management systems and procedures.
  4. Knowledge in at least one of the following fields: history, anthropology, archaeology, material culture studies, Aboriginal studies, cultural heritage studies, museum studies or other related studies.
  5. Good communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills, and good writing and presentation skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to contribute to a project team environment with an understanding of project management principles and processes.
  7. Current driver’s licence.
