The key duties of the position include:
Reporting to the Assistant Manager Fleet Services you will plan, carry out and document the conservation, preservation and maintenance of vessels in the Collection. You will supervise contractors, apprentices and volunteers together with performing the duties of crew aboard the Museum’s vessels.
You will be responsible for the following:
- Maintain records of ships systems that operate normally during the day and record operations aspects of the vessel not limited to fire systems and salvage systems
- Ensure each vessel is maintained in accordance to the VMP’s plan
- Supervision of contractors, apprentices and volunteers
- Provide specialised expertise and input to any curatorial working parties
- Undertake preventative and general conservation procedures on Endeavour including surveys, assessments and evaluations.
- Assist in the set up for special events as required
- Support WHS systems and protocols for fleet vessels and carry out urgent maintenance
- Co-ordinate fleet vessels during refits i.e. docking and undocking in the dockyard
- Develop documentation including papers, reports, presentations, proposals, policies and plans
- Perform the duties of crew aboard fleet vessels.
- Perform the duties of Shipkeeper as required.
The ideal candidate will have:
Technical qualifications in boatbuilding or a recognised marine-related trade
- Demonstrated high level of technical competence and the ability to apply this knowledge to the conservation, preservation and maintenance of historic sailing craft.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise contractors, apprentices and volunteers
- Knowledge of the maritime regulatory framework for the safe operation of commercial vessels.
- Demonstrate the ability to read ships drawing and systems
- Knowledge and understanding of the operation of square-rigged sailing craft coupled with relevant sailing experience and qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Willingness to work weekends and public holidays as required
