Sovereign Hill’s Gold Museum is opening a new quirky exhibition to celebrate its 40th birthday on Tuesday.

The latest exhibition Wonderful Things will display select ‘weird and wonderful’ items from the museum’s 150,000 collection, including the famous Ballarat Bertie mascot from the Ballarat Brewery Company.

Gold Museum curator Snjez Cosic said the birthday celebration was a great moment to reflect on the past and the future of the museum that represents the history and stories of the region.

“I think the museum is a place where people feel they can donate their collections and know they will be looked after for future generations and the community can access the stories at any time,” she said.

One of the collections oldest costume pieces will also be on display at the new exhibition – an elaborate dress dating back more than 200 years.

Entry to the Gold Museum is free on Tuesday for the celebrations that include tours, talks and kids activities.
