Photographer Simone Rosenbauer travelled across every state and territory in Australia to document the country’s small and unique museums. Over the course of four years she visited a disparate range of institutions from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the Apple and Heritage Museum, the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame to the Newcastle Gaol, the Carnaby Collection of Beetles and Butterflies to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs. Rosenbauer took nearly 3000 photographs and conducted extensive interviews with museum custodians to delve into Australia’s cultural memory for her forthcoming book Small Museum.

German/Australian artist Simone Rosenbauer lives and works on the lands of Awabakal and Worimi in Awabakal country, Newcastle, Australia. She studied Photography at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund, Germany, where she received her BA and MA in 2006. In 2008 she received the European Endeavour Award from the Australian Government to study for her MFA in Photography at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, which she completed in 2010. Rosenbauer’s work has been exhibited in the internationally and is held in various public and private collections. She is represented by Laurence Miller Gallery in New York, MContemporary in Sydney and DTR Modern in Boston.
