Australia’s largest public museum organisation is seeking a Senior Curator, First Peoples Archaeology Collection provide curatorial expertise to lead the development and presentation of cultural heritage material from the First Peoples Archaeological Collection.   This position will also provide internal and external advice related to First Peoples archaeological material, particularly in the state of Victoria.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

This position is responsible for curatorial research, overseeing the development of the First Peoples Archaeological Collection. The position will undertake extensive community collaboration in order to document the collections and make them accessible.

Notable skills and experiences:

  1. Extensive knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, cultures and history, especially related to the study of material culture.
  2. Relevant tertiary qualifications related to the study of archaeology and cultural heritage material in the Australian context, and/or comparable and demonstrable work experience.
  3. A demonstrated ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
  4. Demonstrated experience in developing high quality exhibitions, public programs and publications.
  5. Experience in the use of collection management databases and systems to manage information relating to collections
  6. A demonstrated understanding of cultural and legal issues relating to facilitating access to Indigenous collections, and demonstrated experience working with collection material.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a networked organisation, and the ability to communicate effectively with key stakeholder groups and professional networks.
