The Senior Preparator and Workshop Manager will work on the design and fabrication of small object mounts for Memorial’s major new gallery development project. The role will also establish and manage a new mount-making workshop and manage a small team of preparators. The team will also be required to install mounts, objects, and displays in the new galleries in collaboration with the Collection Services and Gallery Development teams. The Senior Preparator will work in close collaboration with Collection Services staff and curators on the design of the mounts and also provide input into project reporting.
Core responsibilities
- Lead the design and fabrication of small object mounts for new exhibitions;
- Interpret design drawings and collaborate with collection specialists to come up with innovative and aesthetically sensitive mounts that provide the best possible support for collection objects on display;
- Contribute to the establishment of a new mount-making workshop including procuring equipment and materials;
- Manage the workshop including equipment maintenance and monitoring;
- Manage and support a team of preparators including their day-to-day scheduling and progress, and also their development and training;
- Provide reports on the progress of the mount-making program;
- Lead the WHS aspects of the mount making workshop including safe operation of equipment, safety documentation and creating a safety culture within the team;
- Actively engage as part of the Collection Services leadership team to foster effective team relationships and contribute to section and Memorial goals.
