Annual salary of between $67,321 and $71,386 plus superannuation. Employment conditions are covered by the The National Museum of Australia Enterprise Agreement 2012-2014 or its successor. Other arrangements may be negotiated under an Individual Flexibility Agreement.

Responsibilies of the section

itThe Curatorial and Research section is responsible for the conceptual development of the Museum’s collections, research, exhibitions and public programs. It has three thematic areas – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories; Australian History and Society since 1788; and People’s interaction with the Environment. The section has the following responsibilities:

  • Developing the National Historical Collection to represent Australian history and experience for present and future generations
  • Maintaining and developing high quality exhibitions and other programs that are challenging and entertaining for national and international audiences
  • Enhancing the NMA’s research standing as an authority on Australian history and experience
  • Cultivating partnerships with leading cultural and academic organisations and associations
  • Contributing to the development of a stimulating and productive workplace in which staff are valued and respected.

Responsibilities of the position

The position reports to the Senior Indigenous Advisor and is primarily responsible for:

  • Contributing to the development and delivery of significant aspects of the Seven Sisters Songlines exhibition
  • Developing plans and objectives for assigned parts of the Songlines exhibition
  • Supporting work associated with the DomeLab sub-project including technical and strategic aspects, relationship development and content delivery
  • Managing competing priorities relating to administrative support for the Senior Indigenous Advisor, the Songlines project and other Australian Research Council (ARC) grant research projects
  • Assisting in preparing correspondence, briefing materials, reports and proposals as well as journal articles, exhibition texts, books, online information and other publications as required
  • Consulting with senior staff in the unit and allied units in relation to assigned tasks including organising forums, workshops and community consultations
  • Assisting in liaising with all ARC Project partners and stakeholders and represent the Museum internally and externally
  • Supporting fieldwork, research and community consultation with due regard to appropriate cultural protocols pertinent to different regions and the Museum’s Indigenous Cultural Rights and Engagement Policy
  • Ensuring that you have sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake your work safely
  • Other curatorial duties as require.

Selection criteria

Applicants must respond to each of the following selection criteria in their application:

  1. Some experience with working with diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, in a museums context.
  2. Sound written and oral communications skills, including strong interpersonal and liaison skills.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience of curatorial practice, including ability to undertake research and contribute to collection and exhibition development.
  4. Demonstrated conceptual and analytical skills with an ability to undertake and support quality research and prepare quality texts in a variety of formats or mediums.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently, cooperatively and under supervision across a range of integrated projects within a small team environment.
  6. Sound technical skills and experience using a range of Microsoft Office programs and databases.
  7. Knowledge and understanding of workplace safety and health issues.
