Auckland Museum is a much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its extensive collections and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum’s stories.

An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated Storage Technician to join the Museum on a fixed term basis at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal.

The Te Awe project is undertaking record enhancement, photography and digitisation, conservation and storage improvements of the Museum’s internationally significant Taonga Maori collection. The role of Storage Technician, Te Awe project contributes to the physical care of the Taonga Maori collection through preparing and housing the collection appropriate to their needs and condition.

The collections and knowledge about them are often the essential basis for Museum exhibitions, public programmes and events. The care of the collection is essential for providing collection access now and for future generations. This position supports the Museum’s responsibility to provide the best care and protection to ensure the Taonga Maori collection is stable and healthy to withstand future access.

The Storage Technician, Te Awe project position is a unique opportunity for people with a collection storage background to make a meaningful difference to the care and understanding of the indigenous culture of New Zealand.

To be successful in this fixed term role, which runs until August 2019, you will offer;

  • Experience in storage redevelopment
  • Experience in packing and handling objects
  • Metal and/or wood working experience (in particular crate and pallet making)
  • Ability to communicate design intent through drawing and other methods
  • Experience using mechanical equipment to access objects (e.g. forklift, wave lifter etc.)
  • Excellent manual dexterity and experience in making object supports
  • Excellent spatial sense and ability to work in tight spaces and handling large objects
  • Good overall understanding of collection management disciplines
  • Awareness of and experience working with taonga Maori
  • Knowledge of Tikanga Maori is desirable
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to ethical and safe work practices.
  • Experience working with the Vernon database is an advantage
  • Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams
  • Understand the principles of equal opportunities, diversity management and the Treaty of Waitangi as they relate to the Museum environment
