We are seeking an experienced communications professional to help us deliver a strong narrative about the future of the Australian War Memorial, communicate important messages about changes onsite, and to tell compelling stories about the need for the redevelopment to a national audience. In addition, the role will work to deliver the Memorial’s internal communications strategy and plan.

The role requires a strategic thinker with strong written and verbal communication skills, with hands-on experience developing communication materials for a variety of channels. Experience managing media issues and/or social media issues will be highly regarded.

This project has a range of passionate stakeholders, including more than one million visitors annually, veterans, school students and teachers, Memorial staff and volunteers, and the broader general public. The successful candidate will possess strong stakeholder management skills and an ability to tailor communication activities to suit diverse audiences. The Strategic and Internal Communication Officer will also act as secretariat for the Memorial’s Redevelopment Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Working Group.

This position will report to the Head of Communications and Marketing, and work closely with the Memorial Redevelopment Project and Digital Experience teams, to deliver accurate, timely, effective, and targeted communication and stakeholder engagement activities to internal and external audiences.

Core Responsibilities

Under broad direction the Strategic and Internal Communication Officer will:

  • Implement the strategic communications and engagement plan to support the Memorial’s redevelopment, ensuring all messaging aligns with the strategic narrative of the program
  • Proactively engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders to gather information, prepare communication materials, and brief executive on communication activities and issues
  • Assist with the creation of positive and reactive media, social media, and internal communications messages relating to the Memorial redevelopment
  • Continually evaluate the effectiveness of communication activities and report performance regularly to the Memorial’s executive group
  • Act as secretariat for the Memorial’s Redevelopment Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Working Group
  • Perform day-to-day communications and stakeholder engagement functions as required by the Memorial
