Duties
- Lead and manage the First People’s Art and Culture team to build and nurture a high-performance culture that ensures the integrity of the First Peoples Art and Culture collections and facilitates a greater community understanding of First Peoples through a range of initiatives and activities.
- Develop and deliver effective and professional stakeholder engagement strategies as a member of TMAG’s Executive Team and oversee and provide advice on the development and delivery of TMAG’s communications and engagement activities with First Peoples including ensuring First Peoples communities’ and researchers have access to cultural materials held in the TMAG collections.
- Foster effective relationships and meaningful engagement with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community and other First Peoples, including working with Repatriation.
- Provide advice and strategies to manage stakeholder issues to the Director and Executive Team at TMAG and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Advisory Council (TAAC) and Board and manage the delivery of those strategies.
- Prepare and maintain high-level stakeholder engagement documentation, and supporting information, to support project design, planning, delivery, implementation, and reporting.
- Develop, improve, manage and review appropriate systems, policies, processes and procedures to support effective and efficient communication and engagement activities with First Peoples.
- Work with the Director TMAG to develop sustainability and capability-building plans for First Peoples and work with, train and supervise employees and volunteers in collections, curatorial and public program projects when required.
- Ensure that the First Peoples Art and Culture collection is developed, cared for, managed, interpreted and communicated in accordance with professional standards, current research trends, strategic priorities and cultural protocol.
- Ensure that First People’s Art and Culture team at TMAG effectively and proactively initiates and manages exhibitions, Indigenous community engagement projects, public programs, digital and related projects (for example publications, documents, community outreach, oral histories and social media).
- Undertake curatorial research to expand knowledge of the Museum’s collections and registration activities associated with the First Peoples Art and Culture collections in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Provide specialist advice and recommendations on acquisitions, deaccessions and loans when required.

- The Head of the State Service has determined that this is an Aboriginal identified position and the person nominated for this position is to meet the Tasmanian Government’s eligibility requirements in accordance with Employment Direction No. 10 – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment in the State Service before appointment, promotion or transfer.
The person must continue to satisfy the above essential requirements/qualifications throughout their employment in this role.
Desirable Requirements
- A current full car driver licence
- Completion of an appropriate or related degree.
