About the Australian Museum

The Australian Museum (AM) operates within the NSW Department of Premier & Cabinet and was founded in 1827 as the first museum in Australia. The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The AM holds more than 21 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite. About the role

The primary purpose of this role is to assist the Australian Centre for Wildlife Genomics (ACWG) laboratory through the provision of laboratory maintenance and technical support for miscellaneous lab related tasks. Laboratory work includes standard molecular biological practices (DNA extraction and PCR), assembling and editing sequence alignments and genotype data, and performing phylogenetic and population genetic analysis across a wide variety of taxa. The position also requires knowledge of standard operating procedures, a working understanding of biosecurity and ISO/IEC 17025 standards, and assisting with training of students, staff and volunteers/interns in these procedures.

Essential Requirements

  1. Preferably BSc or BSC (Hons) degree, or comparable tertiary qualification in science e.g. TAFE qualification.
  2. Demonstrated capacity to work in a molecular biology laboratory. Relevant background in wildlife biology or museum science being desirable.
  3. Adequate knowledge and experience in order to deliver the key Accountabilities and perform to the Focus Capabilities outlined in this Role Description.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of the application of Work Health and Safety (WH&S) legislation and regulations
