The Australian Museum operating within the NSW Department of Enterprise, Investment & Trade cluster, is the first museum in Australia and was founded in 1827. About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Australian Museum and to support its impact on science. The primary purpose of this role is to provide support, technical assistance and expertise to the Australian Centre for Wildlife Genomics (ACWG) – an ISO 17025 accredited facility. The role requires performing core maintenance of the ACWG DNA laboratories, the development and update of SOP’s and carrying out molecular biological lab work (including assembling and editing sequence alignments, performing phylogenetic analysis and running sex determination assays) across a wide range of wildlife taxa.
About you
As the successful candidate you will have strong attention to detail, the ability to perform physically repetitive tasks with high accuracy, good organisational skills and and an understanding off databasing and collections-based software.
Essential Requirements:
- A degree in Science (Biological Sciences) or other relevant qualification.
Knowledge & Experience
- A minimum 3 years’ work experience in wildlife biology and/or genetics/molecular biology across a range of taxonomic groups, including the ability to appropriately evaluate and interpret data associated with specimens.
- Knowledge of legislation, regulations, and Standards relevant to the Australian Museum (particularly those regarding quarantine/biosecurity, dangerous goods, and wildlife compliance).
- Knowledge of databasing and collections-based software, particularly Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and EMu (or similar), and the ability to work with large and complex worksheets.
- An understanding of ISO/IEC Standards and accreditation, knowledge of standard operating procedures to assist with training of staff and interns in these procedures.
- Adequate knowledge and experience to deliver the Key Accountabilities and perform to the Focus Capabilities outlined in this Role Description.
