The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to over 300,000 visitors each year across six sites.

MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Primary Objective

Provide technical assistance in the implementation of the collection management program for the MAGNT’s Natural Sciences collection, and provide support for MAGNT’s research and public programs.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Undertake the collection, preparation, preservation, documentation, registration and storage of natural history specimens, in accordance with Museum standards and practices.
  2. Use collection databases for specimen data entry and retrieval and to generate reports and labels, ensuring the accessibility and accuracy of information.
  3. Prepare, document and package loans of natural history specimens to other institutions, ensuring that all legal and documentation requirements are satisfied.
  4. Assist with fieldwork and research activities, including work in remote locations on land and at sea.
  5. Use, purchase and maintain field and laboratory equipment and supplies.
  6. Develop and maintain professional networks and partnerships with external stakeholders including project partners, community groups and researchers.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  1. Diploma or Certificate in relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
  2. Knowledge of museum collection management standards and practices; understanding of the classification and identification of organisms; and demonstrated ability to undertake the collection, processing and handling of zoological, geological and fossil specimens.
  3. Excellent organisational skills, with proven ability to work as part of a small team with minimal supervision.
  4. Excellent computer skills, including experience in the use of spreadsheets and database systems and experience in performing accurate data recording, entry and manipulation.
  5. An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and beliefs.
  6. Current NT Driver’s license or ability to acquire.
  7. Understanding of the principles of Work Health & Safety and how these relate to safe laboratory practices and field operations.

Desirable

  1. Experience in working in remote locations on land and at sea, often under difficult environmental conditions.
  2. Possession of other relevant qualifications (such as Senior First Aid, Coxswains, Occupational Diving & Chemical Handling certificates and Firearms and Forklift Licences).
