Position Objectives
As a member of the Zoology team, be responsible for the management, preparation and necropsy of incoming threatened birds specimens (mainly eagles and other raptors). This position will be responsible for collection of carcasses and liaising with external stakeholders including TasNetworks and veterinarians to determine the cause of death of incoming specimens and ensure the effective management of carcasses, cataloging of samples and the timely reporting of findings.
Major Duties
- Undertake necropsies of incoming threatened bird specimens, mainly eagles, lodged by TasNetworks and other agencies and determine or seek advice on the cause of death of threatened birds.
- Prepare specimens for research, according to museum best practice, as study skins, spirit specimens or tissue samples, as appropriate for each carcass.
- Capture data on all relevant bird specimens, including measurements, sex and age class, and event, specimen and location data.
- Liaise directly with stakeholders regarding the collection of bird carcasses.
- Develop and maintain professional networks with stakeholders to enhance the scope and accessibility of this collection.
- Provide regular and timely reports to the Senior Curator (Zoology) regarding incoming relevant bird carcasses.
- Add to the body of knowledge on the biology of these birds by analysing data generated from the processing of carcasses.
- Register specimens in, and retrieve information from, TMAG’s databases.
