Australia’s largest public museum organisation is seeking a part-time, fixed-term textiles conservator. The successful applicant will begin in December 2017 and finish in February 2018.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The primary responsibility of the conservator will be to assist with the delivery of a fashion exhibition opening at Melbourne Museum in March 2018.

Notable skills and experiences

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Initiate, develop, manage and participate in conservation and preservation-focused programs, projects and research related to the Museum’s textile collections.
  • Contribute to conservation strategies, practices and work standards related to the Museum’s textile collections.
  • Participate in exhibition production processes.
  • Communicate and demonstrate conservation-specific information, concepts and practices for staff and other stakeholders involved with textile collections.
  • Contribute to the management and maintenance of facilities, equipment, resources, budgets and work planning within the conservation team.
  • Comply with Museums Victoria’s policies and procedures and with relevant legislation and regulations

The successful applicant will have:

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in materials conservation for heritage collections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in remedial conservation of textile items from multi-disciplinary collections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in developing and implementing preventive conservation programs and projects related to multi-disciplinary collections.
  • Demonstrated experience related to the management of loans and exhibition production.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly effective manner in teams and under limited supervision.
  • Well-developed ability to liaise with, train and supervise colleagues, students and volunteers.
  • Highly developed verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • The successful applicant is required to undergo a National Police Records Check and be assessed as suitable for the role (new employees will need to meet this cost).
