TMAG receives $3M for essential mtc

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is creating opportunity in a challenging time by undertaking major and fast-tracked maintenance works at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) during its closure.

With its doors closed to the public due to the impact of COVID-19, work will start on a $3 million maintenance overhaul at the much-loved Tasmanian institution.

I am pleased to announce that TMAG will receive $3 million for essential maintenance projects through the Government’s $50 million Public Buildings Maintenance Fund. This new Fund was announced as part of our COVID-19 stimulus package.

Maintenance projects at TMAG will include important heritage works for public safety and preservation, improvements to the public galleries so that more of the most delicate objects in the State collection can be displayed, and works to address water leaks and storm damage.

Importantly, these fast-tracked maintenance works will also provide ongoing work for those in Tasmania’s building and related sectors.

In addition to these maintenance projects, work will begin later this year on our planned new $1 million permanent Children’s Exhibition.

The TMAG property portfolio includes some of the most significant heritage buildings in the State which are visited by more than 450,000 Tasmanians, interstate and international visitors every year.

Along with maintenance works while the site is closed, the dedicated TMAG team is continuing to share its exhibitions with the public by streaming virtual gallery tours and posting regular updates on social media.
