TMAG’s 10 objects 10 stories

A Housewife (sewing kit) that belonged to Captain Charles Augustus Murray Littler.

10 Objects – 10 Stories: Celebrating Community Collections, Tasmanian Arts Guide, April 2018

The 10 Objects – 10 Stories: Celebrating Community Collections exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is curated by Arts Tasmania’s Roving Curators, Veronica Macno and Melissa Smith. It was developed to feature a selection of remarkable objects and their accompanying stories from small museums and collections around the state in tribute to the anniversary of Gallipoli and the First World War. Through these objects we can share some of our history and celebrate the important role that the community museum sector plays as storytellers and custodians of our state’s unique cultural heritage.

Arts Tasmania’s Small Museum and Collections program is focused on improving best practice in the preservation of Tasmania’s heritage in small museums and galleries state-wide. The Roving Curators are part of this program and work directly with the state’s community museums, history groups and organisations on a range of project types, including: cataloguing, collection management, preventative conservation, planning displays, interpretation plans, significance assessments, volunteer management and more.

Some of the objects featured in the exhibition include:

  • a Housewife (sewing kit) that belonged to Captain Charles Augustus Murray Littler, probably the last Australian to leave Anzac Cove, from the Jack Mason Memorial Museum collection.
  • a flying suit worn by Tasmanian Captain Cottier during his service as a Bombardier in the First World War, from the Royal Australian Air Force Association (Tasmanian Division) Museum collection.
  • a framed needlework panel stitched by a soldier from Ulverstone as part of his rehabilitation in an English hospital, from the Ulverstone History Museum collection.
  • a collection of photographs belonging to Walter Quinn who served with the 11th Light Horse Regiment, from the Derby Schoolhouse Museum collection.
  • a group of objects belonging to Enid Lyons that are associated with the Queen Carnival that raised funds for the French Red Cross in 1915, from the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) collection.

The exhibition is a partnership between the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Arts Tasmania.
