Duties
The Exhibition Projects and Interpretation team is responsible for managing the operational aspects of exhibition projects including the Museum’s permanent, temporary and travelling exhibitions, and other project as required.
The team has a core role in developing and maintaining an audience-centered approach to the delivery of exhibition projects, and in ensuring a collaborative approach to the development of exhibitions. The team coordinates the delivery of evaluation and audience research required for exhibition projects, and ensures the delivery of quality audience experiences.
The team is responsible for:
- The delivery of operational requirements for the permanent galleries, including coordination of showcase and module changes, maintenance and the coordination of small scale projects that contribute to the delivery of a high quality visitor experience.
- The delivery of temporary exhibitions, both internally and externally developed, on a regular basis for display in the Museum’s three temporary gallery spaces.
- Management of a travelling exhibition program that includes a range of different sized exhibitions that tour to metropolitan, regional and remote Australia and internationally.
Responsibilities of the position
The Travelling Exhibitions Officer is responsible for providing general administrative and operational support for the travelling exhibitions program. This includes liaising with host venues, coordinating contracts and agreements, maintaining records and statistics and assisting with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions.
The Travelling Exhibitions Officer will work closely with the two Exhibition Coordinators and the Assistant Manager, Exhibitions Projects and Interpretation, to deliver straightforward travelling exhibition tasks and to coordinate logistics. The position involves some hands on work to install and deinstall exhibitions at host venues, including the use of various tools and equipment.
The position also coordinates the confirmation of venues for travelling exhibitions through email and phone communication, develops touring manuals, provides logistical support, and works closely with Museum colleagues to confirm transport schedules and installation/deinstallation schedules.
The key responsibilities are to:
- Liaise with venues, contractors and consultants in regard to the Museum’s travelling exhibitions program;
- Assist with the procurement of services for exhibition elements such as graphics, freight services and crates;
- Monitor and report against budgets and schedules;
- Obtain, consolidate and report on visitor statistics and visitor experience in regard to the Museum’s travelling exhibitions;
- Assist the whole team to manage information through electronic record keeping systems, databases, contact lists and other information sources;
- Co-ordinate meetings, write minutes and manage the circulation of documentation to internal staff and contractors;
- Develop and manage information systems to ensure Museum-wide access to exhibition related information (such as web and intranet based information);
- Manage and coordinate the repair and maintenance of exhibition elements in exhibitions, including basic installation tasks, liaison with contractors and reporting back to internal stakeholders;
- Assist with the installation and deinstallation of travelling exhibitions as needed. This may require interstate travel; and
- ensures that he/she has sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake his/her work safely and that workers are provided with sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to enable them to perform their duties safely
