Victorian budget supports MV

State Budget delivers for Victoria’s creative industries, Creative Victoria, 1 May 2018

The 2018-19 State Budget has delivered another great result for Victoria’s creative and cultural sector, with new initiatives totalling $78.7 million over four years.

The Budget delivers funding to support organisational sustainability, career-building opportunities for First Peoples, local screen production and global opportunities for Australia’s performing arts sector.

Funding totalling $34.8 million will ensure the sustainability of key State-owned cultural institutions. This includes:

  • Increased operational, maintenance and collections management support for Museums Victoria, the organisation responsible for Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Scienceworks and the Royal Exhibition Building; and
  • A funding boost to enable Geelong Performing Arts Centre to expand its operations and programming when its Ryrie Street redevelopment is complete in 2019.

A two-year, $1 million package of career-building initiatives will seek to address employment barriers and increase self-determination for First Peoples in the creative industries. This includes paid work placements and internships, residencies and cultural exchange programs, and investment in First Peoples focused events and festivals.

$2.9 million has been allocated over four years to host the Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) in Melbourne from 2020-2024. The new-look APAM will deliver a series of tailored showcase opportunities in addition to a biennial industry event.

$8.4 million will support local screen production, including film, television and games development, securing a pipeline of work for the 11,500 Victorians employed across the state’s screen industry.

As previously announced, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) will receive $31.6 million for a major renewal project which will transform the 16-year-old museum in Federation Square.

The project will completely redevelop ACMI’s free permanent exhibitions, dramatically improve the visitor experience, integrate cutting-edge technology, offer new facilities for the screen industry, and double the reach of ACMI’s education offering with a new Learning Centre.

These initiatives are in addition to Creative Victoria’s core funding which invests in organisations, projects, events and initiatives across Victoria’s creative industries.
