About the Australian Museum

The Australian Museum (AM) operates within the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.  The AM is the first museum in Australia and was founded in 1827. The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The AM holds more than 19.5 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite. The AM’s purpose is to make nature, Indigenous cultures and science accessible and relevant to everyone.

About the role

Visitor Experience Assistants (VEAs) provide a wide range of visitor services at the Australian Museum, including engagement with visitors, delivery, support, and administration of programs, exhibitions, education and within the galleries and public spaces. They deliver outstanding customer service, representing the Australian Museum and providing accurate, informative and relevant information about Museum objects, exhibitions, programs, ticketing, memberships, and research and collection areas. They work closely as part of the Visitor Experience and Education team to deliver a seamless, safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.

The AM supports a diverse workforce and promotes applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. People with disabilities who meet the selection criteria are encouraged to apply; and where required, Australian Museum will implement reasonable adjustment consistent with industry standard.

VEA services

Visitor Experience Assistant (Early Years)

VEAs (Early Years) will assist with the delivery of engagement and learning experiences within Kidspace (the under 5s area of the Australian Museum) and other early years programs. Kidspace is a child-centred and educational Museum environment which nurtures and encourages children to experiment, observe, create, learn and grow. The space offers a free play-based approach to learning, as well as incorporating programmed intentional teaching activities developed and implemented by early learning professionals. VEAs (early years) should have experience working with children under 5 years of age, and be comfortable working with family groups. Must have current NSW Working with Children clearance.

Visitor Experience Assistant (Programs and Events)

VEAs working on Programs and Events will be called on help deliver public events and activities, often taking place in the evenings and sometimes on the weekend. Evening events include evening talks, Aboriginal and Pacific workshops, immersive events such as Jurassic Lounge or Murder at the Museum. Daytime events include gallery tours, Seniors Day, wildlife photography workshops, etc. VEAs (Programs and Events) must thrive in a live event environment, with a results-oriented approach to program delivery and strong customer service skills. Keen communicators (performance experience a bonus), they must be at ease entertaining and managing groups of visitors and sharing their enthusiasm for the Museum.

Visitor Experience Assistant (Children’s Programs)

VEAs working on Children’s Programs will be called on to help deliver school holiday activities, birthday parties and Dinosnore sleepovers. Availability during the daytime (especially during school holidays and weekends) is essential. VEAs (Children’s Programs) require strong customer service skills and experience working and communicating with children of all ages. Must have current NSW Working with Children clearance.

Visitor Experience Assistant (Bookings)

VEAs working in the Bookings Office will provide accurate and appropriate information about the Museum’s education and public programs to representatives of education groups, community groups, tourist organisations and the general public. They will make accurate and appropriate bookings for groups via phone, email and online, which maximise the use of the Museum services and ensure successful outcomes for visitors. VEAs (Bookings) require strong customer service skills and experience working in an administrative, sales or customer contact role.

Visitor Experience Assistant (Admissions and Exhibitions)

VEAs (Admissions and Exhibitions) are usually the first point of contact when people visit the Australian Museum. They welcome visitors and guests to the Museum in a friendly manner and enrich their experience, providing professional customer service and accurate information about ticketing, membership or as gallery attendants. VEAs (Admissions and Exhibitions) should have strong customer service skills, the ability to work under pressure, with a high level of accuracy and be able to deal with difficult situations independently and appropriately. Must have current NSW Working with Children clearance.
