The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is the Northern Territory’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to more than 300,000 visitors each year.

We are both a museum and art gallery with collections, exhibitions and programs across our core areas of Aboriginal culture, natural sciences, history and art focussing on Northern and Central Australia and our near neighbours.

MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Our vision is to be a world-class museum connecting people and stories of the Northern Territory.

MAGNT has seven venues: Bullocky Point, the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre), Megafauna Central and the Alcoota fossil site.

MAGNT is currently experiencing a significant period of growth. Additionally the Government recently committed $50 million to build a new art museum in Darwin’s CBD to be operated by MAGNT.

Primary Objective:
This position promotes awareness and access to the collections, exhibitions, programs, and services by ensuring a welcoming and positive experience for all visitors. The role is responsible for the successful daily operation of the Museum’s front-of-house services and amenities at the Visitor Experience Desk by leading the Visitor Services team. The role also acts as an advocate for MAGNT’s audiences within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise, lead and develop the Visitor Experience team to ensure a strong team culture.
  2. Provide coaching, support and guidance to the Visitor Experience Supervisor in their day-to-day supervision of MAGNT’s front of house team.
  3. Coordinate, develop, and schedule a range of tasks relating to the development, programming and administration of MAGNT’s public activities including tours, educational visits, exhibition openings and innovative public programs.
  4. Maintain a culture of warm welcome and informative hosting. Ensure appropriate security, supervision, coaching, and modelling of behaviours that are consistent with exceptional hospitality.
  5. Identify annual training and development needs of Visitor Experience Officers.
  6. Review and update Visitor Experience policies and procedures.
  7. Analyse and review public and education programs, customer feedback and implement innovative improvements.
  8. Identify ways to improve accessibility and inclusion for all current and potential visitors.
  9. Maintain professional networks, links to stakeholder groups and partnerships representative of MAGNT interests.
  10. Coordinate the visitor research and audience insight program, including planning and coordinating data collection, analysis and reporting. Present concise and timely reports to the Executive Management team.
  11. Act as an inter-branch liaison to ensure the provision of current exhibition and program content to front of house staff.
  12. On occasion perform other duties or special projects in addition to the above key responsibilities as appropriate

Selection Criteria:
Essential:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in related field or Museum experience or 3-5 years of customer service and supervisory experience including management of customer-facing staff.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge, experience and creativity in the design and delivery of public programs in a museum or similar environment.
  3. Well-developed administration skills needed for the organisation of public programs budget preparation, project planning and record keeping.
  4. Demonstrated experience in timely and accurate preparation of reports on matters that relate to Community Engagement including Board and Annual Reports.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to write promotional and corporate documentation.
  6. Demonstrated experience in development and implementation of risk management plans to minimise risk and to safeguard staff and the collection.
  7. An ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures and a sound understanding of Work Health Safety (WHS) practises to ensure WHS system compliance.

Desirable:

  1. Experience coordinating events or engagement initiatives.
  2. Experience in the analysis and reporting of basic statistical data.
