The Museum has an exciting opportunity for people who love working in front-facing public roles, to join the Visitor Experience team as a Visitor Experience Host.

The Visitor Experience team is a large, diverse, and creative team delivering high-quality customer service, face-to-face interpretation, engaging education, and curriculum-aligned programs for students and their teachers. We do this through our people who are engaged in staff and volunteer roles.

Our visitors are diverse and include children and their families, adults, and access audiences who visit us in Canberra as independent travelers or in organized groups.

The position of Visitor Experience Host significantly contributes to a visitor’s engagement with the Museum, its themes, programs, and events. They play a vital role in connecting the Museum to visitors (and vice versa) as well as encouraging conversions to paid activities and extension programs. Promoting future visitation while engendering loyalty to the institution is core to this role.

The Discovery Centre is an exciting new permanent family and program facility. Designed primarily for younger visitors and their families, the Discovery Centre is an exciting hands-on and immersive space aimed at children under 6 years, it will spark curiosity, stimulate imagination, and build knowledge. As a Visitor Experience Host, you will engage with children and their carers, encouraging them to explore the Museum’s collections and stories in an immersive, fun, and playful way.

The key duties of the position include:

  • Successful candidates must have a passion for storytelling and the delivery of excellent customer service.
  • You must have a warm and welcoming personality and enjoy engaging with visitors of all ages and demographics. You will work in a large, culturally diverse team, in a creative, exciting, fast-paced environment, where priorities shift and your ability to be flexible and adapt to change is paramount to your enjoyment in the role.
  • Proactively engaging with visitors of all ages and sharing with them the stories of our collections, themes, and purpose this includes developing face-to-face interpretation products (gallery talks and guided tours), leading and inspiring young visitors to connect and explore our collections using inquiry-based learning, operating displays and multimedia experiences.
  • This position will engage with children of all ages, often in large numbers and you should be committed to creating a child-safe and child-friendly environment and enjoy working with children in ways that enhance their positive engagement with the Museum.
  • You will monitor the safety and security of visitors and our collection and will promote current COVID-19 safety messages and advice to visitors.

This is a rostered position over a 28-day period. It includes regular weekends, public holidays, and occasional early mornings and evenings. The position is not a seated one, and you will be rostered to areas with hard floors most of the time.
