MAGNT has seven venues: MAGNT Darwin, the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre), Megafauna Central and the Alcoota fossil site. A new Art Gallery opening in Darwin’s CBD in 2024/25 will add an eighth MAGNT site.

Primary Objective:
This position supervises all aspects of the daily front line operations of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) principal site MAGNT Darwin and Fannie Bay Gaol. These operations include the rostering and supervision of Visitor Experience Officers, monitoring front of house security and safety and administrative tasks including processing public enquiries, group bookings, and supporting the delivery of public programs and internal and external events.

The position holder will have a high standard of personal presentation, an aptitude for service, experience in motivating a team and a can-do attitude.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Under direction from the Visitor Experience Coordinator, duties will typically encompass the following key responsibilities:
    Lead and develop the Visitor Experience Officers (VEO) to ensure a strong team culture
  2. Provide clear communication to VEOs, MAGNT employees, visitors and external stakeholders
  3. Oversee and perform daily reconciliations of over the counter and on-line sales, ticketing systems and public program bookings
  4. Provide a courteous, comprehensive and effective information service to visitors
  5. Ensure VEOs provide a clean, presentable, and accessible environment for visitors at all times
  6. Monitor and maintain the administrative duties of VEOs including the quality of data collected
  7. Prepare and monitor VEO rosters in accordance with operational needs and specified budget
  8. Assist with the development and implementation Visitor Experience procedures and policies
  9. Support the recruitment and on-the-job training of Visitor Experience Officers
  10. Assist with the administration and delivery of internal events and external venue hires
  11. Ensure VEOs monitor and uphold the protection and security of exhibits and objects while invigilating galleries
  12. Monitor and maintain the safety of visitors and Front of House staff while they are on-site
  13. In the event of an emergency, lead the VEOs and Visitors in line with MAGNT’s emergency response procedures
  14. Serve as the primary site manager (Responsible Officer) on Saturdays and public holidays that fall between Tuesday and Saturday
  15. On occasion perform duties or undertake special projects in addition to the above key responsibilities as per MAGNTs operational requirements

Selection Criteria:
Essential

  1. Minimum two (2) years’ experience supervising a team in a customer service environment
  2. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of excellent service and the ability to engage with visitors and staff in a manner that extends the brand and reflects the values of the organization
  3. Excellent communication and administration skills and the ability to use a range of software applications
  4. Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to performance manage and resolve conflict
  5. Demonstrated experience with development of staff rosters and payroll management
  6. Ability to problem solve and confidently manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  7. A moderate level of fitness to comfortably undertake low to moderate physical duties including carrying and pushing operational equipment (e.g. chairs, signage and trolleys) and the large amount of walking involved in the role, including traversing stairs as some galleries and offices are only accessible via stairs
  8. An appreciation for cultural diversity and an ability to work with people from diverse background

Desirable

  1. Knowledge of current museum exhibition principles and practices
  2. An interest in the arts or other cultural organisations
  3. First Aid qualifications including CPR or the ability to obtain
  4. Working with Children Clearance (Ochre card) or the ability to obtain
  5. Northern Territory Driver License or ability to obtain
  6. Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate (RSA) or the ability to obtain
