A catalyst for creative expression and curious minds

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) is an executive agency of the New South Wales State Government. Embodying the best of design ingenuity and innovation, the Museum profiles one of the world’s great collections and is a highly successful interdisciplinary institution that sits at the intersection of the arts, design, science and technology and plays a critical role in supporting the brand and vision of the city.

Access to the Museum’s exceptional collection is a cornerstone of the vision, opening up opportunities for engagement, participation and research. Deepening audience engagement, bringing the collections to life through hands on experiences and offering a variety of pathways through ideas and information is key to the delivery of our programs for people of all ages across our sites: the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, Sydney Observatory in The Rocks and the Museums Discovery Centre in Castle Hill.

The opportunity
The Visitor Services & Venues team is one of the first points of contact for MAAS visitors. As part of a small team of Visitor Services Managers you will be responsible for supervising a team of Visitor Services Officers contributing to the delivery of exceptional visitor experiences across all MAAS sites, programs, exhibitions, events and other activities. You will contribute to the coordination and delivery of a range of events including liaison with both internal and external stakeholders across the Sydney Observatory, Powerhouse Museum and Museums Discovery Centre.

Initially you will be based at the Sydney Observatory on Observatory Hill, however you will be required to work across all MAAS sites when rostered. As the Museum operates 7 days, your roster will include regular weekend work.

Day to day, you will provide hands-on support to the Visitor Services Officers including spending time ‘on the floor’. You will identify ways to continually enhance the visitor experience as well as Visitor Services’ systems and processes. You will also play a key role in site management, safety and emergency management.

About you
Ideally you are an engaging team leader experienced in the operational delivery of exceptional customer experiences in a large venue. To succeed in this role you will have:

  • Previous team leadership experience in a dynamic, high volume, public facing environment
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated success in solving day-to-day operational problems from an end to end visitor centric perspective.
  • Knowledge and experience using relevant visitor facing systems such as POS, CRM and event booking systems
  • RSA, First Aid Certificate and Working with Children’s Check.

As this role involves shift work, you must be available to work on weekends and to work outside of normal business hours to manage events and functions as required.
