The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial’s purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war or on operational service and those who have served our nation in times of conflict. The Manager, Work Health and Safety (WHS) plays a key role in delivering the Memorial’s work, health and safety and early intervention and injury management program. This includes working with all levels of the organisation and coaching and influencing to enable safety to be integrated in core business operations. The role is responsible for managing and leading a small team under the broad direction of the Head, Human Resources. The role is committed to partnering with business, cultivating a safety risk management culture and working independently and flexibly. As a senior manager, the role is also required to contribute to the work of the broader HR Team.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead development, implementation and review of the Memorial’s work, health and safety management system and rehabilitation management system frameworks to ensure legislative and regulatory compliance.
- Develop and monitor the WHS Improvement Plan and annual programs(s) to continually improve the effectiveness of WHS and injury management systems and ensure the achievement of performance objectives.
- Develop and implement early intervention programs, and case management to assist rehabilitation and return to work, in collaboration with Managers, Comcare, and external providers and monitor, evaluate and report on performance quarterly.
- Provide timely advice, expertise and consultancy to Executives, Senior Management and Supervisors and build the capability of the business to ensure sustained and continual improvement in WHS and injury management.
- Manage the reporting and investigation of incidents including leading serious incident investigation with sections to ensure appropriate analysis and effective mitigation/prevention of re occurrence.
- Undertake risk management activities and monitor and analyse WHS data to identify trends, merging issues and improvement opportunities and report on WHS performance on a quarterly and annual basis.
- Prepare complex and/or sensitive correspondence, corporate documents, reports, submissions, proposal papers and notes.
- Lead, coach and manage the APS 6 Senior WHS Advisor to produce quality outcomes.
- Manage the WHS budget in accordance with the Commonwealth government financial management protocols.
- Represent the section and Memorial to internal and external stakeholders including Comcare, Small Agencies forum and Cultural Institutions WHS Network.
- Contribute to the work of the broader HR team and make a corporate contribution as required.
