Tāmaki Paenga Hira: Tui tui hono tangata, whenua me te moana.

Auckland War Memorial Museum: Connecting through sharing stories of people, lands and seas.

Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events and educational programmes.

We are Auckland’s home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.

We are seeking an experienced writer/editor to produce accessible interpretive text for the exhibitions team. This is a fixed-term contract role until August 2020, in which you will write text for exhibitions and galleries, including label text, and for digital and AV experiences. As an editor, this role is responsible for ensuring best editorial practices are followed for the development of exhibition text. The writer/editor will make a vital contribution to the visitor experience at an exciting stage in the redevelopment of Auckland Museum’s permanent galleries.

The successful applicant for this role will be a strong conceptual thinker and an accomplished storyteller, with the ability to develop tone and voice, and engage a wide variety of audiences. Excellent communication skills and a collaborative and positive outlook are essential for working with internal and external stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated experience of writing to briefs for diverse audiences on a variety of topics, in a clear manner and to strict word limits.
  • Demonstrated experience of developing written content from concept to production.
  • Strong structural editing and copy editing skills, with an excellent knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • A sound understanding of best editorial practice.
  • A tertiary qualification in humanities, material culture, science, communication or a relevant field of study.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in text development. Writing for exhibition experiences is an advantage but not essential.

Auckland Museum offers a rich and fulfilling work life where we embrace diversity and nurture our bicultural capability as demonstrated in our Teu le Vā and He Korahi Māori strategies. We also offer a range of great benefits such as flexible work and leave and an award-winning wellbeing programme.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to be part of a fabulous New Zealand organisation committed to telling our national and Auckland stories, reflecting our unique place in the South Pacific.
