Duties

Reporting to the Director and the Deputy Director, the Assistant Director, Discovery and Collections, will lead, direct and oversee the business operations and planning of the Discovery and Collections Division and provide strategic direction in relation to relevant Museum programs, content and delivery. The Assistant Director plays a key role as part of the Executive Management Group and must demonstrate business acumen, strong financial and human resource management skills, and wide-ranging intellectual and analytical capacities.

The role requires the occupant to have a conceptually sophisticated sense of Australian culture, history and museum practice that has been acquired through an extensive combination of practical and academic/professional work experience and study. The incumbent is expected to lead the Museum as an authoritative source in relation to museum practice and/or Australian history and culture.

You will contribute to the Museum and broader cultural sector through the development of organisational strategies and direction that inform the acquisition and development of collection content and how this shapes the Museum.

The incumbent of this position is required to lead and oversee the engagement of key stakeholders on a range of sensitive matters, including repatriation. The role is responsible for contributing to national, international and external stakeholder relationships, and it is expected that the incumbent will have sophisticated communication experience to engage and negotiate with Indigenous communities, international museums, cultural institutions and other APS agencies on a range of technical and business matters pertaining to the Museum.

2. Provide strategic and operational leadership and planning and direct the activities of the Division to ensure the timely completion and delivery of all divisional projects and work plans on budget and to a high standard;

3. Advise the Deputy Director, Director and Council of the National Museum of Australia on operational issues;

4. Represent the Museum’s interests in regard to external stakeholders;

5. Contribute to the strategic planning process and direction of the Museum;

6. Ensure that employees are provided with sufficient resources to enable them to perform their duties safely.
