The Powerhouse Story

The Powerhouse Museum sits at the intersection of art, design, science, and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. The museum is undertaking a landmark renewal program which includes the creation of Powerhouse Parramatta, the largest cultural infrastructure project since the Sydney Opera House; the expansion of the Museum’s Discovery Centre, Castle Hill which includes expanded storage and new research and public facilities and the renewal of the iconic Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo.? Key to the renewal is the assessment and digitisation of over 380,000 objects from the museum’s collection providing new levels of access.

The Assistant Registrar, Grade II will assist with the implementation of Museum policies, processes and procedures encompassing inward and outward loan management, collection administration, stores and logistics, documentation and exhibitions, archives management, ensuring optimal internal and external access to the collections.

The position will be based at Powerhouse Ultimo and the Museum Discover Centre (Castle Hill), and the appointment will be on a full-time temporary basis until 30 June 2023.

Pre-Interview Assessment Task  

You have been requested to lead a team to pack 10 objects (made from ceramic, paper, and glass) for a “gallery” to “collection store” transportation using the material supplied, tissue paper, cushions, tubs, and a trolley. You can use any or all these items. The movement request indicates that the objects are to be transported back to the collection store via a public area.  

Q1. How would you delegate the packing of each of the objects in an efficient and effective way?

Q2. What technological infrastructure would you use to ensure that objects travel is tracked correctly and that the information of the objects is recorded consistently and appropriately throughout the move?
