Join our cultural collections team and help trial an innovative program to encourage young Indigenous people to explore their cultural background by connecting them with Museum collections. You will help develop and deliver a program combining music, dance and other creative activities along with access to the Museum’s world-class collections of Indigenous material culture, art and archival material. With a particular focus on delivering cultural experiences to incarcerated Indigenous youth and at-risk young Indigenous people, this part-time role will involve:
- Delivering programming to at-risk Indigenous youth engaged with the Museum’s cultural collections access program.
- Working with other Museum staff to develop content for the program, including remote access (off-site) programming.
- Helping to establish new partnerships and further develop existing partnerships in the Museum’s delivery of services to at-risk Indigenous youth, and
- Assisting with internal and external evaluations of the program and in engaging with and reporting to project funders.
The Requirements
The successful candidate will combine a desire to share their knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal culture with experience in working with at-risk indigenous youth. Other requirements include:
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues faced by marginalised and at-risk young people, and of relevant approaches for working with at-risk young people,
- Qualifications in youth work, social work, and/or community services or equivalent experience,
- Demonstrated understanding of appropriate protocols such as privacy, occupational health and safety and security when working with at-risk youth,
- Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and a demonstrated interest in cultural activities, visual arts and/or performing arts, and a passion to share that with young Indigenous people,
- Drivers licence, and
- Working with children check.
Aboriginality is an essential requirement for this position.
