Manager, Permanent Galleries and Temporary Exhibitions

The Exhibitions Section has responsibility for the development and management of the Memorial’s galleries and exhibitions program. The program includes the planning, implementation and maintenance of permanent exhibitions and galleries; national and international travelling exhibitions; and temporary and special exhibitions and displays.

The Section is looking for an EL1 Manager, Galleries and Exhibitions. The position manages the high standard of presentation within the Memorial galleries and the development and delivery of permanent, temporary and travelling exhibitions while delivering an extensive gallery maintenance and changeover program. The position requires experience in the delivery of interpretative exhibition design projects within the museum or cultural sector; an understanding and appreciation of museum practices; the ability to contribute to several projects simultaneously at various phases; and collaboration and liaison with Memorial staff, stakeholders and external contractors.

The key duties of the position include:

Working with the Head, Exhibitions and the Exhibitions team members, the EL1 will provide project management and administrative support in the planning, implementation and maintenance of permanent, temporary and travelling exhibitions, including:

  • Manage all aspects of exhibitions including the development and preparation of exhibition documentation for curatorial, collection, design, production/fabrication/construction documentation through all exhibition development phases;
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports, grants, sponsorship proposals and acquittals;
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with Memorial staff, staff at State, metropolitan and regional cultural institutions across Australia, exhibition designers and external contractors;
  • Provide leadership and supervision to a small team of exhibition staff including monitoring and prioritizing work against the agreed business plan; fostering team development; identifying opportunities for improved museum and collection working practices; and advocate for the highest standard exhibition display, design and interpretation.
  • Develop, manage and report against exhibition development and maintenance budgets.
  • Work under a broad direction exercising a considerable degree of independence and make decisions that may have a high level of impact on the direct work area and the broader operations of the Memorial.
  • Manage the development of exhibition tour documentation, which includes crating lists; venue confirmations; loan agreements; guest lists; marketing packs; briefing material;
  • Coordinate the planning of installation and demount of all exhibition types, including touring;
  • Manage the procurement of goods and services as they relate to the exhibition program including the development and management of contracts;
  • Manage and coordinate meetings and prepare and distribute minutes as required;
  • Manage the establishment and monitoring of exhibition lists;
  • Develop and implement exhibition policies and practices;
  • Manage multimedia and image orders using the Memorial’s digital media systems
  • Coordinate host venue visitor statistics, reports and surveys; and
  • Other administrative tasks as required.
