The Ngā Manu Atarau Directorate works in partnership with iwi, hapū and whānau, museums and whare taonga throughout Aotearoa, and advocates for mana motuhake for Māori and Moriori and returning tīpuna and karāpuna to their source communities.
The Iwi Relationships team works to implement the Mana Taonga principle which ensures iwi and communities are able to exercise their tikanga at Te Papa, acknowledging kaitiakitanga and the care and management of their taonga housed within the museum’s collections. The team establishes and maintains these relationships through iwi relationship agreements, collaborating on mutually beneficial projects and by supporting aspirations of the iwi in residence. Alongside other Crown cultural agencies, the team assists Māori and Moriori through the Treaty of Waitangi Settlement process and supports post-settlement commitments. The Iwi Relationship team also fosters biculturalism and supports tikanga Māori within the wider organisation of Te Papa and its activities.
As Kaitohutohu Rautaki ā Iwi, you will play a vital role in the Ngā Manu Atarau Directorate in the Iwi Relationships Team facilitating the management and on-going maintenance of iwi relationships with Te Papa Tongarewa. You will:
Be an advocate for iwi within Te Papa and an advocate for Te Papa with iwi.
Join a dedicated team seeking to make authentic and lasting changes in the way museums and iwi collaborate, interact and share responsibility for caring for taonga.
Play an active role on Rongomaraeroa Marae and work closely with the other teams within the directorate to enhance the understanding of Ngā Manu Atarau’s work with iwi and the sector. Building organisational wide relationships with other teams across Te Papa is a key part of the role.
Have existing positive relationships with key iwi stakeholders, and experience engaging with iwi organisations, using a competency and understanding of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
Be able to manage and deliver complex iwi or kaupapa Māori projects, be an exceptional communicator and enjoy working in both detailed and conceptual environments. Strategic and innovative thinking and planning, alongside effective relationship building, negotiation and consultation will be part of your skillset.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about advancing opportunities and potential for iwi Māori and who understands the value of genuine manaakitanga, and also embody and enable the power of mana taonga. The salary range for this position is $66,761 to $91,796. Offers will be made within the range to reflect the skills and experience offered by the candidate and those required of the role, and internal relativities with other employees.
